Welcome to the Website of Modern Dancer and Actress Helena Melkjorsen
Helena found dance at the age seven at a ballroom dance class, and within a few years she was helping her teacher with younger students. By the age of fourteen she had taken her first class in ballet and modern dance, and that set the spark for career choice.
In 1995 Helena was accepted to the School of Modern Dance in Copenhagen (later known as The Danish National School of Contemporary Dance). Since her graduation in 1999 she has been dancing professionally in contemporary dance productions, together with theatre and opera performances, working closely with leading Danish and international choreographers.
New York has played an important role in Helena's ongoing studies over the years. Her work is inspired by in-depth programs with several acknowledged teachers and institutions, for example Dance Space (DNA), Movement Research, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre and Cunningham Dance Studio. The sources of inspiration for Helena's work on stage are the release based techniques and show dance. Helena’s main studies as an actor have taken place at the William Esper Studio in New York.
Helena is a founding member and creative director of Apollo Theater, a Copenhagen based theater group focusing on performances for children and youth, mixing dance and theater in a unique format.
